The Brazos County Sheriff's Office released a statement describing the incident:

"On July 18, just before 10 a.m., deputies with the Brazos County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 23000 block of FM 159 in reference to a major crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.

"Initial reports indicated that a vehicle had struck a bicyclist, leaving an adult female lying in the roadway. First responders arrived on scene and provided emergency medical care before the victim was transported to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later passed away at the hospital.

"The victim was identified as 26-year-old Hannah Rapp.

"During the course of the investigation, investigators learned that the driver of the vehicle, identified as 31-year-old Charles Medina, had passed two bicyclists traveling along FM 159. After passing the bicyclists, Mr. Medina stopped his vehicle, reversed, and struck one of the cyclists.

"At this time, investigators believe this was an isolated incident. The investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives continue to gather evidence and review all available information.

"Charles Medina was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He was transported to the Brazos County Detention Center without incident."

Rapp, from Muncie, Indiana, was a former track and field athlete at Purdue. She moved to Texas in 2024 with her boyfriend and kept a full-time job as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M while kicking off her boxing career with coach Carl Perry at Bryan Boxing in the town of Bryan.

"Hanarchy" Rapp (8-1-1, 5 KOs) made her pro debut in 2024 and last fought on June 13 in Orlando, where she unsuccessfully challenged Tiara Brown for the WBC featherweight title as part of a Most Valuable Promotions show on ESPN.

Rapp left an indelible mark on Brown, who called the 21st rival of her undefeated career "the best dance partner I have ever faced as a pro."

"When she asked for my autograph, it filled my heart because we were getting ready for war, yet she was still asking for my autograph," Brown wrote on social media. "It made me smile. We fought a great fight for the fans from the first bell to the last. It was my honor to share the ring with her."

MVP also shared its tribute to Rapp in a statement: "A beautiful person and a brilliant boxer is how she will be remembered by all of us at MVP. She went to war and smiled right after. Our thoughts are with Hannah’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We are grateful to have shared a part of her journey and will honor her memory in the weeks ahead. Rest in peace, Hannah. You will be deeply missed."

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement that Rapp's passion for the sport and her unwavering spirit will always be remembered as an example of excellence and nobility.

"The loss of Hannah Rapp leaves us heartbroken," Sulaiman said. "She was an exceptional fighter, but above all, an invaluable member of our boxing family. We join in the grief that overwhelms her loved ones, her team, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and supporting her throughout her brilliant career.”
