On May 31, all roads were supposed to lead to Jermall Charlo versus Caleb Plant later in 2025. Armando Resendiz brought the planned bout between the former champions to a screeching halt.
Resendiz won The Ring’s 2025 Upset of the Year for his split decision over Plant to win the interim WBA title. He was announced as the winner at The Ring’s second annual awards gala on Friday at Cipriani’s in New York.
Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) won the interim WBA title with his win over the former world champion, and he was later elevated to full titlist.
“I'm so happy and beyond thankful,” Resendiz said via translator after beating Plant. "I fought many battles, and now I am here. I couldn't be more thrilled with how things turned out. It was the confidence I had in my skills and myself to have serenity and not listen to the outside noise."
After Plant, 33, got off to a good start, Redendiz’s pressure started to take over the fight. The 26-year-old from Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico, eventually started to wear down Plant (23-3, 14 KOs). Resendiz consistently found a home for his chopping straight right hands and appeared to hurt him to the body.
Resendiz’s activity allowed him to control much of the second half and left little doubt he had done more than enough to pull off the upset. Judges Max De Luca and Steve Weisfeld both scored it 116-112 for Resendiz, while David Sutherland inexplicably had it 115-113 for Plant.
He outlanded Plant 186-106 in total punches and 109-70 in power shots, according to CompuBox.
"This upset belongs to my entire team," Resendiz said. "We had more than one strategy as a team. It wasn't just Plan A. I stayed true, listening to my corner. The way we interacted was a key to the victory. We saw the fruits of that labor coming through, and we didn't stop."
The other finalists (alphabetically):
- Rolando Romero def. Ryan Garcia, UD 12
- Ekow Essuman def. Josh Taylor, UD 12
- Ricardo Sandoval def. Kenshiro Teraji, SD 12
- Fabio Wardley def. Joseph Parker, TKO 11
