Few trainers can say they’ve coached their kids to become multiple-time world champions. Shingo Inoue has done just that, and with the success of his sons Naoya Inoue and Takuma Inoue last year, he was named The Ring’s 2025 Trainer of the Year.
Shingo was announced as the winner at The Ring’s second annual awards gala Friday at Cipriani’s in New York.
Naoya (32-0, 27 KOs), who is the undisputed 122-pound champion and The Ring’s No. 2 fighter pound-for-pound, went 4-0 with two knockouts in 2025. He easily dispatched of late-replacement Ye Joon Kim with a fourth-round stoppage in January, but found himself in arguably the toughest fight of his career in his next bout.
Naoya, 32, was dropped in the second round by Ramon Cardenas, who was a heavy underdog heading into their clash May 4. The two fighters went back and forth for much of the fight before Naoya was able to break down the spirited Cardenas (27-2, 15 KOs) and stop him in the eighth round.
Naoya won dominant unanimous decisions over Murodjon Akhmadaliev in September and David Picasso in December in his other two bouts. Naoya has won world titles in four divisions under the tutelage of his father.
Takuma (21-2, 5 KOs) only fought once last year, but he more than made it count. Shingo’s younger son became a two-time champion with a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Japanese countryman Tenshin Nasukawa to nab the vacant WBC bantamweight champion. Takuma, 30, won 116-112 twice and 117-111 across the three judges' scorecards
The other finalists for Trainer of the Year (alphabetically):
- Robert Garcia
- Rudy Hernandez
- Brian McIntyre
- Manny Robles
