Floyd Schofield may have won his first world title on October 10, but he's ready for an immediate lightweight unification.
That's according to his father and trainer, Schofield Sr., who hinted at a cross-promotional matchup against Top Rank-backed Abdullah Mason in the first quarter of 2027.
"It looks like Top Rank sent that paperwork for Abdullah Mason. They get the numbers right, and it's here in San Antonio they got a fight [in] February [or] March," he said in a self-recorded video posted on Instagram.
"This is going to be [an] amazing fight, but the money got to be right. That's all I'm waiting for, to see that money and the location and we'll go from there. So hopefully they can make it happen. Abdullah Mason, Kid Austin. 2027, end of February, or early March. Man, this is going to be a banger."
Mason, a 22-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio, is coming off his first WBO title defense on July 4 in his hometown against Albert Bell. The southpaw scored two knockdowns in the final round before a stoppage win over his good friend, who stepped up on short notice after Joe Cordina was denied entry into the country.
Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs) is Mason's mandatory challenger, and while unconfirmed there is a high likelihood the pair will contest his WBO crown as part of the Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua undercard on December 11.
Cardiff's Cordina was this week cleared and found not guilty of assault, with the judge deeming it self-defense after footage of the February incident circulated online. During legal proceedings, the 34-year-old former IBF junior lightweight titleholder told the court a criminal conviction would risk him losing his boxing license.
Whether it's Schofield, WBC titleholder William Zepeda or Cordina next, Mason made one thing clear during a recent interview. He wants them all.
In conversation with Brian Custer on the Last Stand Podcast, Mason was asked to give his perspective on Schofield.
"It's a lot of talk but there's only one person I can step in the ring with at a time," he said. "I'm definitely ready to unify with anyone who has a belt, if that [a Schofield unification] is next, then so be it.
"I feel like there's definitely been a lot of talking here and there. When I got into the sport of boxing, I got into it to actually step in the ring and compete. If anyone is ready to step in and compete with me for my championship, I'm all open to it, anybody with a title or in a position [to challenge], I'm ready. I'm here to do my job and compete."
