Harlem Eubank believes a statement victory over David Papot will pave the way to a crack at new IBF welterweight champion Liam Paro.
The Brighton man will headline a London arena for the first time July 18, when he takes on the once-beaten Frenchman at the Copper Box. Despite his home advantage, Eubank (22-1, 9 KOs) has been priced as a 2-1 underdog against Papot (30-1-1, 5 KOs), whose only loss came against Paro in his last outing.
Paro got the decision after 12 grueling rounds September 18 in Tennyson, Australia, and has since beaten Lewis Crocker to win a 147-pound title. Eubank knows he can enhance his standing by performing better against Papot than the reigning IBF champion.
“This feels like a world championship-level fight already,” Eubank, who is ranked No. 15 by the IBF, told The Ring.
“In my eyes, he should have got the decision over Paro, who is now IBF welterweight world champion. I think it was the first time the mainstream really got a glimpse of him, but I know what he’s about. He has taken a lot of scalps already. He’s beaten Bilel Jkitou, who is the current European middleweight champion. I’m looking at this like a real world-level fight and I will be prepared for that.
“Given what he’s achieved, the fights he’s been in so far and how he’s performed, I think it will be a real statement on the world scene. I know I can make a lot of noise by winning this well because he has already had that fight with Paro, there is a direct comparison. If I can do a better job on him than Paro did, it will throw me right in there to potentially fight him next. But I’ve got a big challenge here in front of me, which I’m not going to look past.”
Eubank has been aligned with Wasserman for many years and has been built steadily on Channel 5 in the UK. But now he hopes doors will open given that this fight, his first under the MF Pro banner, will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.
“It feels like there's bigger opportunity to make the big fights I’m chasing now we’re on DAZN and feels like we’ve got more backing,” Eubank said.
“I’m grateful to have headlined on so many Channel 5 terrestrial shows to garner that wider audience and have the opportunity to do some huge numbers on that platform. But I feel like a shift to a new platform is an opportunity for me to get new eyes on me across the world. It is a platform with a sporting focus, so I will hit the right audience.
“Now it’s up to me to make sure they like what they see. I don’t feel any extra pressure, just think it’s a privilege to get an opportunity like this. It’s an honor, I’m looking to go in there and take the opportunity with both hands, put in a serious performance here against a guy many people believe will beat me.”
