Caroline Dubois has opened up on how an ordinary family cinema trip led to her new car getting "completely burned down."
The 25-year-old Ring lightweight champion beat Terri Harper on April 5 to unify the WBC and WBO 135-pound titles and is now just two belts away from becoming undisputed. Her promoter, MVP’s Nakisa Bidarian, said the undefeated Dubois will receive a new car from the company once she does so in keeping with the promise made to her McGuigan’s Gym stablemate Ellie Scotney.
But Dubois was in need of a new car much sooner after a shocking incident sent her vehicle up in smoke and gave her a fresh perspective on her own life.
“It’s the most craziest, most bizarre story, honestly,” Dubois told The Ring.
“So, I bought this car and I actually loved it. I loved driving it and really enjoyed having it. But then, about six months after I got it, me, my brother, my sister went to the cinema to watch the new Avatar.
“We go into the cinema, come out, and return to the car only to find it has been completely burned down. I’m talking completely burned down.”
Despite the timing of the fire, when she and her siblings were away from the parked car, Dubois ruled out any chance of an attack.
“It was not that,” she said. “It just caught on fire and burnt down so, I think there was something wrong with the car. I found out that there was an electrical issue with the car. It was just so bizarre. We parked up, turned the engine off, went into the cinema, came back, and it was completely burnt down.”
Although her new car had been destroyed, Dubois’ immediate thoughts were of gratitude considering that nobody had been hurt.
“When I think about it, we were just so lucky,” Dubois said. “And it's crazy because the next day I woke up and saw the incident with Anthony Joshua, where his two friends died. I was like, ‘Oh my God. It just put everything into perspective.
“It could have been so much worse because if I parked up outside my house, then it would have set fire to the house and caused way more damage. God was on our side and he gave us good luck. It could have been so much worse. It could have honestly caused so much more destruction.”
Now a few months on, Dubois has replaced the car and is back to chauffeuring her brother and sister around London.
“I got paid out for what happened,” she said. “I got another car, but made sure I got a different brand.”
