A junior welterweight storm seems certain to break out when Mark "Thunder" Chamberlain travels to Dublin to face Pierce "Big Bang" O’Leary at 3Arena on Saturday.
The fight initially was due to take place at the same venue on March 14 but a serious chest infection forced Chamberlain to withdraw.
O’Leary (19-0, 11 KOs) grew up in the shadow of the 3Arena but had spent his entire professional career training and fighting in England.
He had waited years for the opportunity to fight in front of his own people and made the most of the situation by fighting highly-respected late substitute Maxi Hughes, stopping him in the fifth round to gatecrash The Ring's 140-pound rankings.
O’Leary, 26, has been touted as a future star for some time and has shown himself to be much more than a top gear pressure fighter but he appears to have gained a lot of confidence from the way he walked down Hughes and seems certain to make the running again this weekend.
He'll to be careful, however, as taller man Chamberlain (17-1-1, 12 KOs), who made his name as a ferocious lightweight, now operates five pounds north after losing to Josh Padley in final 135-pound fight in September 2024.
Although we only have the evidence of his violent 12-round majority draw with Jack "The Demolition Man" Rafferty to go on, moving permanently to 140 pounds seems to have done wonders for Chamberlain.
Chamberlain has a long standing relationship with his trainer, Jarred Partridge, but realising the stakes are getting higher and higher, the pair have started to spend more time training alongside the all-star cast at Ben Davison’s gym.
The 27-year-old southpaw carries power at the end of his punches and showed against Rafferty that he can also be effective in close quarters battle.
Both fighters have legitimate power, are ambitious and confident in their ability, and whilst both can box, neither will hesitate to hold their feet for a split second longer than may be safe in order to get their own power shots off.
Fantasy
The picks are in from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. Think you can beat him? Predict winners for prizes.
They said it
Pierce O’Leary: “I think the only chance you had of coming close to beating me, Mark, was the first one and you missed your chance. The pressure was on me. I’ve been there. I've done it. It's time to go and do it again. I know the feeling. I know what it's like and I want more of it.”
Mark Chamberlain: “I ain't got a bad word to say about the fella. I don't know him but all I do know is we’re gonna get in there and we're going to have a fight.”
What are the odds?
O’Leary is a short 2/5 favourite to score a career best victory and continue his unbeaten run. Chamberlain is a very live underdog at 7/4.
Must-see fights on the undercard
As Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua prepare to bring one heavyweight era to an end, a talented group of young fighters are positioning themselves to follow in their footsteps.
Dublin’s Adam Olaniyan (2-0, 2 KOs) will make the third appearance of his young career.
Unless there is a shock of monumental proportions, Olaniyan will beat Argentina’s Jonathan Claudio Sauco (5-2, 1 KO) but it is always interesting to see the development of a young heavyweight.
Olaniyan won the 2024 World Youth Championships and the 6-foot-6 tall 20-year-old is a part of Queensberry’s deep heavyweight stable.
Olaniyan is also scheduled to fight on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s farewell fight at Dublin’s Croke Park on September 5 as his handlers look to galvanise the fanatical Irish support from the very early stages of his career.
Location
The 3Arena in Dublin.
How to watch
The fight will be streamed live on DAZN. Coverage gets underway at 4pm BST/11am ET on the Queensberry and DAZN YouTube channels.
Coverage of the main card starts at 7pm BST/2pm ET on DAZN.
