Canelo Alvarez doesn’t think a fight against David Benavidez is even possible at this point.
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) never seemed interested, but the weight difference between the pair now looks to be too large after Benavidez moved up to cruiserweight to dethrone Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez for his WBA and WBO titles on May 2 in Las Vegas.
Benavidez still holds the WBC light heavyweight title, and Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) stated that he plans to return to 175 for fights against Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, the latter holding The Ring, IBF, WBA, and WBO belts.
When asked if he would be willing to fight Benavidez at 175, Alvarez who hasn’t fought at that weight since losing to Bivol in 2022, laughed before giving his answer.
“I don’t think he can make even 175 anymore,” Alvarez said. “I don’t know but it’s not my problem.”
Alvarez's main focus is becoming undisputed at super middleweight once again. "Yes," he replied when asked if that was his goal at 168.
Christian Mbilli, however, stands in the Mexican's way. The duo will clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on September 12 for the Frenchman's WBC title. This will be Alvarez’s first fight since losing his undisputed throne to Terence Crawford last September.
At the age of 35 and nearly 70 fights under his belt, Alvarez doesn’t believe his run at the top of the sport is over.
However major players are competing at 168, including The Ring's No. 2 super middleweight Osleys Iglesias, who holds the IBF super middleweight title.
Alvarez's former opponent-turned-stablemate, Jaime Munguia, is the WBA champion while the WBO strap remains vacant.
