Fundora: Makes Sense To Fight Last Undisputed Champ Charlo Next

LAS VEGAS – Sebastian Fundora would welcome a fight next with another former champion who has long been affiliated with Premier Boxing Champions.
The WBC super welterweight champion confirmed after he stopped Keith Thurman in the sixth round Saturday night that former undisputed 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo could be his next opponent. Charlo, 35, hasn’t boxed since he lost a lopsided 12-round decision to Canelo Alvarez in September 2023.
“I think that’s a great fight,” Fundora said during his post-fight press conference at MGM Grand. “That’s a PBC fighter as well, the last undisputed 154 champion as well. So, you know, a fight with him seems like it makes sense.”
Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) moved up from the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds to 168 to challenge Alvarez 2½ years ago. The Houston native never lost his IBF, WBA, WBC or WBO belts in the ring and would be the most accomplished opponent of Fundora’s nine-year professional career.
The long-inactive Charlo attended Fundora’s fight with Thurman because he wants to face the 6-foot-6 southpaw next. Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) is interested in title unification fights as well, but with WBA/WBO champ Xander Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) set to defend his belts against Jaron “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs, 1 NC) on June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the WBC champ’s schedule won’t align with the Zayas-Ennis winner.
England’s Josh Kelly (18-1-1, 9 KOs) owns the IBF belt, but Fundora-Charlo is a higher-profile fight and, as Fundora mentioned, he and Charlo are aligned with Al Haymon’s PBC.
“He got a little power,” Charlo told journalist Sean Zittel as he left MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night. “He stepped his game up. I like Sebastian Fundora for me.”
Charlo, a former Ring junior middleweight champ, is not ranked by The Ring due to his inactivity. Fundora is The Ring’s second-ranked contender for a vacant championship, higher than Zayas (No. 3), Ennis (No. 5) and Kelly (No. 6).
Charlo believes he would fare much better than Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs, 1 NC) if he fights Fundora.
The much taller, younger Fundora battered Thurman, opened a nasty cut beneath the former WBA/WBC welterweight champ’s left eye and overwhelmed his 37-year-old opponent with his high punch output. The 28-year-old Fundora, of Coachella, California, led 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 on the scorecards when referee Thomas Taylor stopped their bout at 1:17 of the sixth round, with Thurman still on his feet.
“I think [Fundora] stops the majority of those guys that’s out to beat him, like Errol Spence,” Charlo said. “I think he stops him. Fundora’s an excellent fighter, he’s a champ. ... He dominant, but he can’t f*** with me.”
