Denzel Bentley’s WBO middleweight title reign might be coming to an end.
The sanctioning body officially announced that Bentley and Yoenli Hernandez, the mandatory challenger, have 24 hours to inform it that they'll fight next.
On September 2, the WBO ordered Bentley and Hernandez to begin negotiations. Once those talks were virtually nonexistent, it ordered a September 29 purse bid. Warriors Boxing Promotions, the lone participant, won the rights to the bout with a $200,000 bid. Bentley was entitled to at least 75%, or $150,000, while Hernandez would earn $50,000.
Shortly after, Bentley (22-3-1, 18 KOs) announced that he signed a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing. He’s scheduled to make his debut on November 7 against Shane Mosley Jr. at Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the United Kingdom. That bout would serve as the co-main event to Chris Billam-Smith vs. Cheavon Clarke.
Bentley, 31, new that his decision to fight Mosley would be frowned upon by the WBO. So instead of being immediately stripped, he petitioned it to allow him to fight Mosley, who’s ranked sixth by the organization. Bentley also stated that he he'd face Hernandez and would be willing to fight him after Mosley.
After considering his appeal, the WBO won’t allow Bentley vs. Mosley to happen. If the London native opts to go through with his scheduled bout, he will be immediately stripped.
Hernandez (11-0, 9 KOs) would then fight for the vacant title. The No. 2 contender is Vito Mielnicki.
