Agit Kabayel’s connection to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua goes beyond fighting in the division they once reigned over.
The WBC champion sparred with Fury and Joshua early in his career. When the British heavyweight stars meet in their long-awaited clash for the WBA "super" heavyweight title on December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, he favors the 6-foot-9 Fury.
“The better boxer, the better boxing IQ is Fury,” Kabayel told The Ring’s Louis Hart. “Only one guy in the heavyweight division can beat the guys with one hand — this is Anthony Joshua. This is a very interesting fight for the fans, but when I give a prediction for the fights, I think Fury will win.”
Fury (36-2-1, 25 KOs) versus Joshua (30-4, 27 KOs) headlines a Ring card that will stream on Netflix worldwide.
Kabayel (27-0, 19 KOs), The Ring’s No. 2 heavyweight, said he sparred Fury in 2016 and Joshua three years later. Between the two, the 34-year-old from Germany said he had a much tougher time with Fury. He also added that he sparred more with Fury.
“When I sparred with Fury, I was a young guy,” Kabayel said. “This was a very big experience for me. I sparred very good with him, and after that, I go three years later and sparred with Anthony Joshua. For me, the hardest sparring was Fury. With AJ, I had more experience.”
Kabayel was elevated to WBC champion after The Ring heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk vacated the IBF, WBA and WBC titles on June 26. He’ll make his first title defense against Nelson Hysa (25-0, 23 KOs) on November 28 at ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Hysa, 42, stopped Thomas Narmo in the second round on August 29 in London. After the win, the Albanian contender met Kabayel face-to-face and they traded words at ringside.
Kabayel is coming off a third-round stoppage of Damian Knyba on January 10 in Germany.
