Xander Zayas got 2026 off to the perfect start but he wants even more success as the year progresses.
Fresh off his win over Abass Baraou to become a unified champion, The Ring’s No. 3-ranked junior middleweight has his eyes on more gold.
“[My team] already made a call to Matchroom and Team Josh Kelly because that’s who I want to face next,” Zayas said on The Ariel Helwani Show. “That’s what I told them I want to do, I want to collect the third belt. We’re waiting on a response from Josh Kelly’s team, and hopefully we can make something happen for the summer.”
Kelly, 31, won the IBF 154-pound title after upsetting the odds to beat Bakhram Murtazaliev on January 31. The Sunderland has also made it clear he wants to unify.
Zayas, who holds the WBA and WBO belts, wants to become the division’s first undisputed champion since Jermell Charlo in 2022.
“Yes, sir, yes sir,” Zayas said when asked if becoming undisputed is his ultimate goal. “Little by little, step by step. The next step, hopefully, is Josh Kelly, that’s who I want, and that’s what he wants because he’s also said the same thing. So we’re both on the same page. Hopefully, it’s Sebastian Fundora right after I win that belt.”
Fundora, the division’s WBC champion, is scheduled to defend his strap against Keith Thurman on March 28 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Zayas wants them all, and Kelly's promoter Eddie Hearn is willing to oblige him on his request to face the Englishman. Hearn is currently is attempting to seal the deal on a showdown between Vergil Ortiz and Jaron Ennis, The Ring’s No. 1 and No. 5-ranked junior middleweights.
As Hearn attempts to get that fight across the finish line, he has proposed a mini tournament, of sorts.
“I think the fight, not just for Josh but for boxing as well, is Xander Zayas vs. Josh Kelly. Two good, young world champions, two great-looking kids, two great-looking ambassadors, two great fighters,” Hearn told iFL TV. “Let’s do a two-fight deal where the winner fights the winner of Boots vs. Ortiz.”
