On the week of his 27th birthday, the newest super-middleweight world champion Hamzah Sheeraz declared that the best is yet to come.
Sheeraz claimed the vacant WBO title in Egypt on Saturday night when he swept aside Alem Begic in the second round of their clash on the "Glory in Giza" card at the Pyramids.
The Ilford man and his new belt returned to the UK on Sunday in time for his birthday celebrations on Monday, which he described as low-key.
Because, as far as Sheeraz is concerned, the work is nowhere near done with Saturday’s victory seen as simply the first significant step towards the undisputed crown.
“I’ve won a world title not but I want more,” Sheeraz told The Ring. “I’m not content. I want unification fights.
“There’s not really any I want more than others, I want any of them. All of the champions are great champions so any of them, man. We are here now, we’re at that level and now it’s about getting the biggest fights and as many of the titles as I can. I truly believe that I can become undisputed at 168lbs.
“I know the best is yet to come. I’ve just turned 27 and now I feel like I’m getting to my peak. There are only bigger fights on the horizon now so it’s about solidifying them and becoming the best version of myself possible.
“When most fighters win the world title they think ‘this is it, I’ve finally got there’ but this is only the beginning for me.”
Sheeraz had been initially ordered to face Diego Pacheco for the WBO 168-pound belt vacated by Terence Crawford late last year. However, when Pacheco pulled out of that fight, the sanctioning body waved in their No. 4-rated Begic.
It was clear from the outset that the 39-year-old was simply nowhere near Sheeraz’s class and he took a beating before the end eventually came with 27 seconds left of the second round.
Sheeraz, The Ring’s No. 9-rated super-middleweight, said: “When I sat with Andy Lee the day before the fight, the message was simple. He said ‘go in there and get him out of there.' There was no complicating things, he said I’m levels above him so I need to go and do what I need to do and get that world title. That’s what I did.
“If it was me who hand-picked that fight then I’d say it was easy. But when the person I was supposed to fight pulled out at the 11th hour, then the purse bids for the WBC fight [with Christian Mbili] got cancelled, what can I do? I can only fight the person in front of me.
“You can never really make boxing fans happy. When I fought Edgar Berlanga people told me not to take it, it’s too hard, too risky but i took it and won it. But now this one is too easy. I’m just doing me, chasing my dreams and my goals.”
