The ending of Oleksandr Usyk versus Rico Verhoeven left a sour taste.
Turki Alalshikh is among those who opposed Usyk’s stoppage victory over Verhoeven at the end of the 11th round in the main event of “Glory in Giza” in Egypt on Saturday. With how well Verhoeven performed, Alalshikh wants to give the former Glory Kickboxing heavyweight champion a rematch against Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs), though, he first hopes the unified heavyweight champion will face Agit Kabayel next.
“It was a bad stoppage,” Alalshikh told The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. “Rico deserved to continue to fight. It’s clear that Usyk was controlling in the end, but the referee should have allowed the fight to reach a clear result. It is the call of Usyk now what he does next. Kabayel has waited a long time. We want to do the fight in a stadium in Germany. And after that, we want to see the rematch with Rico.
"And I want to do two more fights with Rico. I had Rico up three rounds entering the 11th round."
Kabayel (27-0, 19 KOs), of Leverkusen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, is The Ring’s No. 2 heavyweight and the No. 1 contender for Usyk’s WBC title.
Verhoeven (1-1, 1 KO) turned in a more than admirable effort, and as a result, the fight hung in the balance entering the championship rounds. Two of the judges, Manuel Oliver Palomo and Fabian Guggenheim, had the bout 95-95, while Pasquale Procopio had Verhoeven ahead 96-94.
With just over 20 seconds left in the 11th, Usyk, The Ring’s No. 2 fighter pound-for-pound, dropped Verhoeven with a right uppercut. Verhoeven rose on wobbly legs and had to walk to his corner to have his mouthpiece put back in.
With the end of the round near, Usyk swarmed him with a flurry of punches as his back was in the corner. As the bell began to ring, referee Mark Lyson stepped in to stop the fight before the 12th and final round.
