Vergil Ortiz's unexpected stint on the sidelines will not last much longer, after a positive update from Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya.
During the Oscar Collazo-Neider Valdez broadcast on DAZN at the weekend, De La Hoya was asked about developments on a series of topics including Ryan Garcia-Conor Benn, Collazo-Sandoval, Gervonta Davis-Floyd Schofield and the future of arguably his most exciting promotional star.
WBC interim 154-pound champion Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) hasn't boxed since his second-round stoppage of longtime contender Erickson Lubin on November 8, after which social media went into overdrive as talk of a long-awaited Jaron Ennis showdown intensified.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs, 1 NC) watched his explosive performance ringside with Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn, the pair had an animated face-to-face and the general consensus was they would finally meet around April time.
Instead, former Ring and unified welterweight champion Ennis will hope for a 29th birthday present this weekend when facing unified WBO/WBA champion Xander Zayas on DAZN PPV. Ortiz is on the outside looking in, though that is set to soon change.
DAZN's Chris Mannix said there 'seems to be a thaw' in litigation between Team Ortiz and Golden Boy, after reports suggested Ortiz was offered higher financial guarantees elsewhere with Ennis part of a three-fight deal.
Golden Boy president Eric Gomez and Ortiz's manager Rick Mirigian are said to have the framework for an extension, but are just waiting for Oscar's go-ahead to press forward.
When asked to clarify the latest developments, De La Hoya smiled saying: "There's nothing that makes me happier to see fighters get in the ring, perform, continue their career and do the best they can, be world champions."
"Vergil Ortiz is one of the best out there, I hate not seeing him fight so do I want to resolve this? Absolutely, a thousand per cent. Did they or we make a mistake? No. There was a misunderstanding, everything is great, Eric is talking to Rick and we're making this happen.
"I'm very comfortable, we have our deal in place, outside people try to ruffle things up but we have the contracts, relationships ... we've had Vergil since he was a baby, we feel we're very close and Vergil will fight this year."
