A new junior lightweight king will be crowned Saturday night when IBF and WBO champion Emanuel Navarrete and WBC beltholder O'Shaquie Foster square off in a title unification fight.
The vacant Ring title will be up for grabs for the No. 1-ranked Navarrete and second-ranked Foster.
Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) enters the clash with clear-cut decision wins over Raymond Ford last time out in May and Stephen Fulton in December. "Ice Water" has also enjoyed hallmark victories against Mexican fighters like Rey Vargas and Eduardo "Rocky" Hernandez throughout his 14-year career.
The awkward, volume-punching Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) should present to be the toughest test Foster has ever faced. Navarrete is a former 122- and 126-pound titleholder and lightweight title challenger who is 2-1-1 with a No Contest over the last three years. But "Vaquero" looked better than ever during his last outing by showcasing his aggressive Mexican-style offense in a dominating, 11th-round stoppage win against Eduard "Sugar" Nunez.
They said it
O'Shaquie Foster: "I don't see any of [Navarrete's pressure] giving me problems. I've seen that style, I've seen the rangy, awkward punches. I'm rangy myself. I just think he gets away with … doing a great job weight bullying these guys. Once he stepped up to people his size, we've seen the difference. We're just gonna have to see how it turns out on fight night.
"I just need to stay focused, stay active, be myself, and then dominate. I feel like naturally I'm the better fighter. I'm the sharper fighter. I know my distance well. I feel like inside-outside, I'm the better fighter. I know he said, if we bang it out, that's his best – that's his best chance, yeah. But I think I'm a better inside fighter as well. I just got to put it all together."
Emanuel Navarrete: "We will pressure him at all times. We know how he fights. I think the one that wins the fight is the one who tries to look for the fight more and who is more accurate that night.
"I think he's gonna develop a plan to try to deal with my pressure in the best way possible, but we're gonna do everything to make that difficult and impossible for him. It depends on Foster and the kind of fight that he brings [if this can be a fight of the year]."
