Christopher Guerrero became a fringe contender with three wins last year.
However, in his last two wins over Sandy Messaoud (TKO 10) and Williams Andres Herrera (UD 10), Guerrero failed to impress, but he's ready to put that behind him when he faces fellow unbeaten Delante 'Tiger' Johnson on Saturday at Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio, live on DAZN worldwide and TNT in the U.S.
"I have a theory, the better the boxer is, the better I become," Guerrero (16-0, 9 KOs) told The Ring. "The more the guy can box, I have to bring out the best of myself.
"Herrera was a walk in the park, it was really chill, I didn't feel any urgency to do anything or bring the best out of me. I didn't feel like I had to put the pedal to the metal in that fight. The fight before that was Sandy Messaoud, that fight I had to into my bag to really put a statement win on that, I knocked him out in the end, the guy has never been stopped before. I think that was a big statement, but I could have performed better in the whole fight, but it was a great knockout. I kind of impressed myself with that power in the last minute of the tenth round.
"I think Delante Johnson will bring out the best in me. I think this is the first time they'll see 100 percent of Christopher Guerrero performing to the best of his abilities."
It is nine months since the 25-year-old Canadian last fought. He had been tabbed to return in March and then when that didn't happen it moved to June before he got the call to face Johnson.
The rising welterweight was surprised Johnson wanted to face him but was happy to accept the opportunity.
"Honestly, out of all the 147s he could have picked to fight, I'm confused as to why he picked me," he said. "Maybe he's underestimating me because I'm haven't been giving my best performances in my last two fights, if I'm completely honest with myself. In a way it's a good thing.
"Once we heard Tiger Johnson wanted to fight, we were like, 'So be it, we'll be ready for it,' We'll definitely take that high risk, high reward kind of thing.
"A lot of doors are going to open. We've got to take it one fight at a time. This fight is going to shoot me into another stratosphere and I'm ready for it."
Guerrero spent three weeks with his coach Giuseppe Moffa and rising super middleweight Wilkens Mathieu in Florida in preparation.
"It was really hard to find sparring in Miami, the work was in Orlando, Tampa," he said. "We got in touch with Omari Jones coach and we got some work with Omari, he's very similar in style to Johnson, maybe a couple of notches better than him.
"The sparring went amazing. Considering Omari Jones is 6-foot-1, also a former Olympian, younger and taller than Johnson. I was talking to his team, and they seemed pretty confident I can pull of the upset in Cleveland, Ohio."
Johnson (17-0, 8 KOs) was an excellent amateur, who represented America at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals.
Since then, the 27-year-old has made his way in the professional ranks and holds wins over one-time prospects Yomar Alamo (UD 8), Janelson Bocachica (UD 10) and is coming off a career best win over Nicholas Flaz (TKO 4) on November 11.
