TOKYO, Japan – Two of the very best pound-for-pound fighters in the world collide on Saturday.
Naoya Inoue defends his undisputed and Ring junior featherweight championships against classy challenger Junto Nakatani at the Tokyo Dome on Saturday. The 12-round bout will be promoted by Ohashi Promotions.
A colossal event, this all-Japanese showdown between unbeaten multi-weight world champions was officially announced in March, with all 55,000 tickets selling out a month before fight night.
Those lucky enough to obtain a ticket did so via a lottery system, which was also used for fans willing to pay to see Friday's weigh-in at the famed Korakuen Hall.
This is arguably the most meaningful fight on Japanese soil since Fighting Harada dethroned legendary Brazilian Eder Jofre for the undisputed featherweight crown in May 1965.
Japan is a major boxing hotbed and has produced many great fights, but Inoue vs. Nakatani is a special encounter capturing the attention of fans around the globe.
Inoue (32-0, 27 KOs) is currently rated No. 2 on The Ring’s mythical pound-for-pound list behind heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk. The 33-year-old power puncher has captured titles at junior flyweight, junior bantamweight, bantamweight and junior featherweight. Coming off a convincing 12-round unanimous decision win over Mexico's Alan Picasso in December, this will be The Monster's seventh defense of the undisputed 122-pound championship.
Nakatani (32-0, 24 KOs) is rated No. 6 on The Ring's pound-for-pound list. The rangy southpaw, known as "Big Bang", has won championships at flyweight, junior bantam and bantamweight over the past five-and-a-half years.
Blessed with quick hands, quick feet, and excellent fundamentals, Nakatani brings the kind of firepower that fans have been waiting to see Inoue tested against. In his most recent outing, Junto outpointed the super-durable Sebastian Hernandez over 12 rounds on the Inoue-Picasso undercard.
Fantasy
The picks are in from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger and Max Kellerman. Think you can beat them? Predict winners for prizes.
They said it
Inoue said: "Above all, the feeling that I cannot lose is what drives me. I refuse to lose to Junto Nakatani."
Nakatani said: "By defeating the world's best in Naoya Inoue, I will prove that I am the strongest. I am ready to hold all five belts on May 2."
What are the odds?
As is always the case when "The Monster" is in action, Inoue opens as a prohibitive 1/4 (-400) favorite, with oddsmakers pricing a stoppage victory around 11/10 (+110). Despite being an elite-level operator, Nakatani is a 3/1 (+300) underdog in a two-horse race, and the odds of a stoppage are long at 5/1 (+500).
What are the weights?
Inoue: 121.5 pounds
Nakatani: 121.9 pounds
Must-see on the undercard
In the co-main event, Takuma Inoue, Naoya's younger brother, will make the maiden defense of his WBC bantamweight title against legendary four-weight world titleholder Kazuto Ioka.
Ioka will be attempting to become Japan's first-ever five-weight world champion. If successful, he would join Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Terence Crawford as the only other male fighters to achieve the feat.
Another intriguing bout on the card sees former world title challenger Jin Sasaki in action against countryman Sora Tanaka at welterweight. On paper, Sasaki has vastly more experience with 23 professional fights under his belt. However, Tanaka was a national champion as an amateur and has knocked out all five of his professional opponents, so many believe he can pull off the victory.
Location
Tokyo Dome, Japan.
How can I watch it?
The show will be streamed live on DAZN from 3:00 a.m. ET / 12:00 a.m. PT, with main event ring walks expected around 8:00 a.m. ET / 5:00 a.m. PT.
