William Zepeda secured the best win of his career last weekend, clearly outpointing Lamont Roach by unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC lightweight title.
Zepeda relied on his customary relentless pressure to push the pace and bank the comfortable win, outlanding Roach 218-153 in the clash while throwing 884 punches 293 more than Roach according to CompuBox.
During the post-fight show on DAZN's and TNT's second installment of "The Fight," former five-division champion turned commentator Terence Crawford, who held a lightweight title in 2014, assessed the encounter.
"Zepeda caught me off guard. I wasn't ready for that," Crawford said. "I was looking for the straight, come-forward type fighter. His footwork, distance, range, angles, feints, jabs, counterpunching ability, punch placement and how he was controlling the fight [was impressive]. I knew it was going to be a bad night for Roach."
In the immediate aftermath, Crawford and company also wondered what's next for Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs).
Abdullah Mason, the 135-pound WBO champion, who was ringside to witness the occasion, was top of mind as an ideal next opponent for the 30-year-old "Camaron."
Another top-tier name tossed into the mix was Emanuel Navarrete, the IBF and WBO 130-pound champion.
Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs), like Zepeda, is a relentless Mexican slugger who brings an entertaining fighting style every time he fights.
"Man, that's CTE at its finest. It's a bloodbath waiting [to happen]," Crawford said regarding the potential fight.
Navarrete appears headed toward a title unification fight against WBC champion O'Shaquie Foster.
But the 31-year-old could also be inclined for another lightweight run following his civil war and impressive, one-sided stoppage win against Eduardo Nunez to unify the junior lightweight titles in February.
Navarrete, who's held titles at 122 and 126 pounds, gave the lightweight division a test in May 2024 but was unsuccessful in a split-decision defeat to Denys Berinchyk for a vacant title.
A bout between Zepeda and Navarrete would certainly be a barnburner and a war, as Crawford suggested.
