Adam Azim's crucial world title eliminator against Gustavo Daniel Lemos is off, The Ring has learned.
The pair was set to clash for the No. 2 spot in the IBF junior welterweight rankings at London's Copper Box Arena next weekend in the main event of the Boxxer show live on BBC Two.
But the plan unraveled this month after both fighters sustained hand injuries which will prevent them from boxing January 31.
First it was Argentina's Lemos (30-2, 20 KOs) who was forced to withdraw after the injury during training camp. But in a bid to ensure Azim could still box, the promoters worked hard on securing a viable replacement.
It is understood New Jersey's Nahir Albright (17-2, 7 KOs), who has boxed Keyshawn and Kelvin Davis, was drafted in to fight but now that has been cancelled, too.
During Azim's final spar of training camp, The Ring's No. 8 140-pounder injured his hand as well, meaning neither of the original main event fighters would be available. However, there is still hope that the fight between Azim and Lemos will take place later this year.
Both will need time to heal first while Azim, a devout Muslim, will need to organize a new training camp during the holy month of Ramadan, which runs from February 28 until March 29. There is hope that the fight could take place in April or May.
It is more bad news for the BBC, which also had to deal with a late postponement to the original date for Frazer Clarke and Jeamie TKV, which was the first event of a new deal with Boxxer.
They had been initially set to clash for the vacant British heavyweight title on October 25, but a rib injury to TKV meant they had to wait until November 29.
The Ring has learned that Saturday’s show, which was due to be aired on BBC Two, might still take place, albeit on a different channel.
The chief support bout between undefeated bantamweights Francesca Hennessy (7-0, 1 KO) and Ellie Bouttell (7-0-1, 2 KOs) over 10 two-minute rounds is expected to be elevated to the main event slot.
