Former world title challenger Steve Claggett has emerged as a target for Adam Azim’s next outing.
The 22-year-old Azim recently broke into the top 15 with the WBC as a result of his impressive run to 13-0 (10) and has been pegged for a return to the ring in late June-early July.
His last outing was an impressive ninth-round stoppage of Sergey Lipinets in the main event at Wembley Arena on February 1 and it is understood that his Boxxer promoters are hoping to build another show around the youngster.
Now his trainer Shane McGuigan has confirmed that Claggett could fit the bill as a potential opponent, as they attempt to find someone with a decent name in the sport who can provide Azim with rounds.
Claggett, 35, went the 12-round distance with Teofimo Lopez in June last year and, although it was the eighth defeat of his 49-fight career to date, only one of those came inside the distance - when he was stopped with just 90 seconds left to go of an eight-rounder with Romeo Jakosalem way back in 2011.
Azim has been regularly linked with fellow British super-lightweight contender Dalton Smith but he is expected to challenge for the WBC world title should he overcome Mathieu Germain this weekend. Meanwhile Harlem Eubank, another target for Azim, appears to be nearing a potential fight with Jack Catterall.
So McGuigan has confirmed that they will be looking at international fighters, and Claggett is on the list.
He told Ring Magazine: “Adam is only a couple of fights, maybe even one fight, away from a world title and that’s a great position to be in for a 22-year-old.
“We will be looking at international fighters, in terms of Americans, guys who have got decent names and have been in there at the top level. Maybe Claggett.
“We will have news soon. I have my eyes set on a few names for Adam but there are a lot of variables. We are looking at the end of June, potentially early July.”
