Carlos Adames weighed 164 pounds when he woke up the morning of January 30 in New York.
There wasn’t anything abnormal about that for the WBC middleweight champion. Adames always sheds those final three or four pounds the morning he weighs in for fights at his division’s limit of 160 pounds.
Nothing that occurred thereafter was normal for the Dominican champion. Unbeknownst to Adames, he was so extremely dehydrated that it became physically impossible to cut those final four pounds.
His handlers had no choice but to remove him from his optional title defense against Austin “Ammo” Williams the next night on “The Ring 6” undercard at Madison Square Garden. A two-month training camp abruptly went to waste, Adames didn’t get paid and, perhaps worst of all, he had no idea why his body reacted the way it did following a productive training camp.
“It was really surprising what happened to me, really unexpected,” Adames told The Ring.
“I felt good leading up into fight week, really good. We were working on the weight cut. Then I went to the press conference [January 29]. Afterwards, I ate some chicken breast, salad and an orange then slept. I got up in the morning, it was time to make weight and I was around four pounds overweight. That's just normal to me, I normally cut three to four pounds [the day I weigh in], all that would [require] is a 45-minute run and I'm ready to go.”

“But when I started that 45-minute run, I started to have cramps all over my body. My abs were extremely sore as well. I wasn’t able to stand up straight. So, my team looked at me and said, ‘Listen, your health is first. We’re gonna go on and cancel the fight.’ I didn’t want to do that, but basically my body just wouldn’t give anymore.
“Unfortunately, that’s why we had to cancel the fight. The doctor said it would’ve been impossible for me to have put gloves on and fight because, at that time, my kidneys were about to collapse for a period of time because I was just so severely dehydrated.”
Milwaukee’s Williams defeated Wendy Toussaint (17-4, 7 KOs), Adames’ late replacement, by unanimous decision in a 10-round super middleweight match January 31.
After a doctor determined drinking more water and taking vitamins would enable Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs) to make weight comfortably for his next fight, his team quickly rescheduled his bout with Williams (20-1, 13 KOs). They’ll fight Saturday night, just seven weeks after Adames’ disastrous trip to New York, in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream from Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida (8 p.m. ET).
Adames took three weeks off from training, but returned to the gym feeling fresh. The Ring’s No. 1 middleweight contender expects to knock out the eighth-ranked Williams in a fight DraftKings lists Adames as more than 3-1 favorite to win.
“I was really upset and really sorry that I wasn’t able to make good on my commitment to fight,” Adames said. “So, in terms of this second camp, we just had to lower the intensity to ensure that we don’t overtrain and don’t push beyond that limit, so that we go into the fight adequately prepared.”
