MONTREAL — Light heavyweight wins for Albert Ramirez and Mehmet Unal.
World-rated light heavyweight Albert Ramirez scored an impressive third-round stoppage over Marko Calic at the Montreal Casino, Montreal.
Ramirez, who is rated at No. 5 by The Ring at light heavyweight, started fast and ran into a solid two punch combination in the opening seconds. It did nothing to dappen his spirits. The 32-year-old, who fought for Venezuela at the 2016 Olympics, pressed the action and had plenty of success backing up the visitor.
Early in Round 3, Ramirez (20-0, 17 knockouts) landed a right hand that saw Calic (15-2, 9 knockouts) stumble around and fall into the ropes. A follow up combination dropped Calic.
It was the beginning of the end, although he showed heart to continue there was too long left in the round and Ramirez made the most of that scoring a second knockdown, again he made it up but referee, Frank Gentle, listened to Calic corner and called off the action at 2:10.
Mehmet Unal overcame a slow start to bludgeon Ezequiel Maderna into defeat in three-rounds in a light heavyweight contest.
Maderna, who represented his native Argentina at the 2008 Olympics, boxed well in the opening round snapping Unal's head back noticeably from an uppercut and right hand but the Turkish-born fighter gobbled them up and ploughed forward.
It was a similar pattern in the second round. However, once Unal warmed into things he quickly took over, a snappy left hand left hand put Maderna over late in the second round.
Unal (12-0, 10 KOs) threw a heavy looking combination, a left hook that visibly moved Maderna, who moved backwards, Unal followed and threw a combination punctuated by an overhand right that dropped Maderna (31-14, 21 KOs). Although he made it to his feet referee Martin Forest had seen enough and waved off the fight at 1:41 of Round 3.
