Alberto Puello will once again appear on a show headlined by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
A fight date was revealed for Puello’s WBC mandatory junior welterweight title defense versus Sandor Martin. Their bout will take place on March 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as announced Wednesday during the annual WBC convention in Hamburg, Germany.
Dominican Republic’s Puello (23-0, 10 knockouts) is The Ring No. 4 junior welterweight contender. The 30-year-old southpaw—who trains in Las Vegas—won the belt in a June 15 split decision over Gary Antuanne Russell, who was 17-0 (17 KOs) and The Ring No. 9 contender at the time.
The bout took place on the undercard of Davis’ eighth-round knockout of unbeaten Frank Martin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Baltimore’s Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), The Ring No. 1 lightweight, successfully defended the WBA lightweight the title that he will risk versus Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1, 10 KOs) atop the March 1 show. Roach is The Ring No. 5 junior lightweight, where he holds the WBA belt but will move up in weight for this fight.
Puello previously held the WBA junior welterweight title. He was stripped of the belt after he tested positive for clomiphene ahead of a canceled May 2023 title defense versus Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. Puello was fined and suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission but has since added two wins, including his WBC title-winning effort over Russell.
The WBC belt became available in part thanks to Martin (42-3, 15 KOs), who has been the mandatory challenger for more than a year.
Spain’s Martin was in line to challenge Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), The Ring No. 1 junior welterweight, but agreed to step aside. Haney instead fought Ryan Garcia (24-1, 17 KOs; 1 No-Contest) on April 20 at Barclays Center, though the bout was mired in controversy. The WBC belt was not at stake after Garcia badly missed weight, though he subsequently beat Haney by majority decision.
The official verdict was nullified by the New York State Athletic Commission after it was learned that Garcia tested positive for ostarine.
Haney was then ordered to next face Martin. Top Rank claimed the rights to the fight as the lone bidder during a purse bid hearing, but Haney vacated the belt in exchange for a ‘Champion in Recess’ designation.
Puello and Russell were permitted to fight for the vacant belt, on the condition that the winner face Martin. Puello-Martin was then ordered. TGB Promotions—on behalf of PBC—and Top Rank were able to reach a deal and avoid a purse bid hearing.
