NEW YORK - Alycia Baumgardner had a few tough moments, but more than enough to beat Bo Mi Re Shin at Infosys Arena in New York's Madison Square Garden.
Before scoring a wide points decision (98-92, 98-92, 99-91), Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) took control in the first two rounds. She popped out a beautiful jab in those first six minutes, constantly snapping Re Shin’s head back.
But while she continued to inflict serious damage, Re Shin moved forward and in round three, that determination paid dividends.
During the round, the South Korean native landed a hard right hand to buckle Baumgardner's legs. Once she regained her composure in the following frame however, The Ring and unified champion got right back to work.
She went back to what was initially working for her, the jab. But, an overconfident Baumgardner got caught again in the sixth. Re Shin could sense the moment and let off a hard combination. Baumgardner grabbed and held for the remainder of the period. In the following round, she implemented an entirely new game plan.
In the eighth and ninth, the unified champion began boxing on her toes, moving excessively. Re Shin's pressure, which worked beautifully earlier, was rendered ineffective as she began hitting at air.
In the final frame with just a few seconds left, the pair traded hard shots. Although it seemed like a fairly close fight, all three judges scored it wide in Baumgardner's favor.
In the immediate aftermath, Baumgardner made it clear who she wants next and it's not Caroline Dubois.
"Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, what's up?" Baumgardner said during the post-fight interview, before MVP co-founder Jake Paul doubled down on the former, telling her to stop 'running scared' in Ireland as the two-division undisputed world champion prepares to pull down the curtain on her illustrious career later this year.
