Amanda Serrano is scheduled to defend her WBO and WBA featherweight titles in a rematch against Erika Cruz on January 3 in Puerto Rico.
Amanda Serrano is set for a homecoming after completing a scintillating trilogy against Katie Taylor.
Serrano will defend her WBO and WBA featherweight titles in a rematch against Erika Cruz on January 3 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on DAZN, Most Valuable Promotions announced on Tuesday.
Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs) beat Cruz (18-2-1, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision in a bloody bout in 2023, and this time, the sequel will be contested in 10, three-minute rounds.
Serrano, a seven-division champion and trailblazer for women's boxing, has competed in three-minute rounds twice before and pushed for the same set of rules against Taylor, but her wishes never came to fruition.
After suffering back-to-back spirited decision defeats to the undisputed junior welterweight champion Taylor in July and November of last year, the 37-year-old Serrano now gets to march to the beat of her own drum against Cruz.
“Every time I step into the ring, I fight for all women, for equality and for Puerto Rico," Serrano said in a statement. “Getting to fight three-minute rounds in a unified world title defense in front of my people will be one of the proudest moments of my career.
“Together, we are showing all the young girls out there that they can do anything they put their mind to, and that women’s boxers deserve the same opportunities as men. Anyone who saw our first fight knows that this will be an all-out war, and we are ready to make history again."
Serrano last fought three-minute rounds in a 12-rounder against Danila Ramos in October of 2023 and scored a unanimous decision win, soon after slugging it out in a war and split decision loss against Taylor in their first fight in 2022. Serrano’s other scheduled fight with three-minute rounds was in 2017, but she needed only one round to stop Marilyn Hernandez in their 10-rounder.
Cruz, a 35-year-old from Mexico, is unbeaten in four fights since suffering the second loss of her career to Serrano.
“I’m very happy and excited for this great opportunity,” Cruz said in a statement. “This is the most exciting rivalry in world boxing. Mexico versus Puerto Rico means a guaranteed war. If our first fight was a colossal battle, you can’t miss what will happen on Saturday, January 3."
