The winner will be mandatory challenger for recently-minted IBF titlist , who claimed the belt with a narrow 12-round split decision over his Mexican compatriot Rene Calixto Bibiano , having previously fought to a split draw.
We knew Andrew Moloney-Argi Cortes was in the works and now the revised specifics of their impending IBF junior bantamweight title eliminator are set. The Zanfer Promociones event will take place at a venue to be determined in Durango, Mexico on August 9.
The fight had been tentatively scheduled for July 19, as reported by The Ring's Manouk Akopyan in late May, but was moved back three weeks to the new date.
The winner will be mandatory challenger for recently-minted IBF titlist Willibaldo Garcia, who claimed the belt with a narrow 12-round split decision over his Mexican compatriot Rene Calixto Bibiano on May 23 in their rematch, having previously fought to a split draw.
Moloney (27-4, 17 KOs), The Ring's No. 5-rated junior bantamweight, was a seasoned amateur who won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He has scored solid wins over Luis Concepcion (TKO 10), Miguel Gonzalez (TKO 8) and Elton Dharry (RTD 8) before falling short in a three-fight series with then-WBA champion Joshua Franco.
A four-fight win streak after that unsuccessful trilogy saw him well-positioned to face pound-for-pound star Junto Nakatani for the vacant WBO title, though he was dropped three times and eventually stopped in the final frame of their May 2023 contest.
The Australian returned with a 10-round points win over Judy Flores seven months later before losing a heart-breaking split decision against Pedro Guevara for the WBC interim title last May, as part of the Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos Jr undercard.
Guevara proved no match for unified and reigning Ring champion Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez six months later, while Moloney returned with a third-round stoppage victory over Thailand's Jakrawut Majungoen on December 15 to finish his 2024 campaign in the win column.
Cortes (27-4-2, 11 KOs) made his professional debut six months earlier than Moloney in 2014 and had a very different route to world-level contention.
The 30-year-old fell on difficult times with consecutive defeats a year apart during his formative years, though rebounded strongly and didn't lose again before facing then-Ring champion Juan Francisco Estrada in September 2022.
Having shown he could compete at the highest level, the Mexico City resident won a pair of 10-round decision wins against low-level opposition to earn a shot at Nakatani, who then held the WBO crown at 115-pounds. After a wide 12-round decision loss in September 2023, he remained active with two victories beyond more credible opponents on home soil.
