Andy Cruz has made it clear who he wants to fight next. “William Zepeda,” he told several reporters, referring to the new WBC lightweight champion. “I’m coming for you.”
Cruz (7-1, 4 KOs) will have come a long way in only two fights if he can make that fight happen. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist suffered his first career setback only seven months ago, losing a majority decision to IBF 135-pound champ Raymond Muratalla in his maiden title shot.
He bounced back to stop durable, but limited Mexican Abraham Montoya last month, after which the WBC installed him as it’s No. 1 contender (behind Zepeda and interim titleholder Jadier Herrera).
Cruz had hoped to face Muratalla in a rematch. However, the champion has indicated that he plans to give up his belt and move up to 140 pounds.
Thus, Cruz shifted his focus to the newest titleholder. And his No. 1 ranking combined with his name recognition might make a viable candidate to challenge Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs), who won his belt by outpointing Lamont Roach in a career best performance on August 1.
The slick Cuban also considered moving down to 130 pounds after his loss to Muratalla, even suggesting he might fight at both 130 and 135 depending on his opportunities.
However, based on Cruz’s bold comments, Zepeda could keep him at 135 for the time being if he finds the matchup attractive and they can come to terms.
