Anthony Cacace believes that beating Jazza Dickens will secure his legacy as one of Ireland’s greatest ever boxers.
If he can get past WBA junior lightweight champion, Dickens (36-5, 15 KOs), at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday night, 37-year-old Cacace (24-1, 9 KOs) will become a two-time world champion and join some esteemed company. DAZN will stream the event globally.
The Belfast man is finally enjoying the type of world level success that many always expected him to achieve but is continuing to set new goals.
“I want to cement my family's name in Irish boxing history,” Cacace said at Thursday’s final press conference.
“I'm the first Irish junior lightweight champion ever so to go on and be a two-time and be up there with the likes of Colin Frampton, Katie Taylor and all these greats, that’s what this is all about now.”
Always renowned as a heavy-handed and awkward, Cacace spent years trying to tempt the division’s biggest names into the ring.
His fortunes turned in 2024 when he snatched away Joe Cordina’s IBF world title. He has since beaten former featherweight champions Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington and sits at number three in the The Ring rankings at 130 pounds.
It took 34-year-old Dickens 14 years of sacrifice and dedication to accomplish his own dream of becoming a world champion. Cacace respects the Liverpudlian and recognises the determination it has taken to reach the top. He is also acutely aware that the man ranked at No. 8 by The Ring won’t give up his treasured world title belt easily.
“I know Jazza's got a big heart, the same as me,” Cacace said.
“We're pretty similar in terms of careers. I'm not going to be talking any crap here. I fully respect Jazza. I fully respect what he's done. I fully respect his family and he's here for the same reason as me.
“We need to put food on the table for our kids. That's the bottom line. It's going to be a great fight. I know he wants it and I want it.”
