Anthony Cacace will go through with his dangerous mandatory title defense versus Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez.
The Ring has confirmed that the IBF 130-pound title fight will move forward, budgeted to take place in mid-to-late March. A location was not specified for the bout, though likely to land in the United Kingdom. Undisclosed terms were reached between Queensberry Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, who represent Cacace and Nunez, respectively.
The overdue mandatory is a pairing between The Ring top ten contenders at junior lightweight. Belfast’s Cacace (23-1, 8 knockouts) is currently No. 4, while Mexico’s Nunez (28-1, 28 KOs) is No. 9.
Cacace-Nunez was first ordered back in May. The call came shortly after Cacace’s May 18 upset stoppage win over then-unbeaten Joe Cordina (17-, 9 KOs; No. 6 at 130 by The Ring) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight was sent to purse bid before a deal was reached that allowed both fighters to take interim fights before their direct meeting.
Cordina defeated England’s Josh Warrington via lopsided decision on the Sept. 21 UK launch for Riyadh Season at Wembley Stadium in London. The fight was made because event organizers wanted an all-British lineup.
Nunez accepted a stay-busy fight versus former title challenger Miguel Marriaga (31-8, 26 KOs), whom he stopped in the sixth round on an Aug. 31 Matchroom show in Carson, California. It came more than six months after the lights-out puncher from Los Mochis stopped former IBF titlist Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in the eleventh round of their Feb. 16 IBF title eliminator in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
The twice-ordered IBF mandatory title fight was sent back to a Nov. 7 purse bid hearing. The matter was delayed another week before Queensberry and Matchroom reached a verbal agreement at the time. It was enough to cancel the purse bid outright.
Cacace will attempt his second title defense, while he aims to extend his current eight fight win streak. Nunez carries an eighteen-fight win and knockout streak into his first career title fight.
