Arnold Barboza Jr. needed a fresh start, and new targets.
So immediately after his unanimous decision defeat to Teofimo Lopez on The Ring’s Times Square show last year, he took some time off to get his mind right. After some thought, he believed the next best thing for his career would be to move up in weight.
The 34-year-old will leave 140 behind and make his welterweight debut on March 14 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California against Kenneth Sims.
Although not exactly known for his power, the former WBO interim champion believes that may change now he's campaigning at a more comfortable weight.
“The extra seven pounds feels good,” Barboza told The Ring. “I’m able to eat whatever I want. My power should be even better, I can’t wait to test it out.”
Before opting for a change in divisional scenery, Barboza (32-1, 11 KOs) did some self-reflection. Suffering a wide defeat by Lopez on a career-best stage was humbling, though he insists the experience wasn't all bad.
“I learned a lot in that fight,” Barboza said. “I didn’t perform the way I wanted that night, much respect to Teofimo but I know I’m on the elite level.”
Barboza is now giving Sims (22-3-1, 8 KOs) his undivided attention, and for good reason. Prior to the defeat he suffered against Oscar Duarte in August, the Chicago native was on a nine-fight winning streak.
Barboza reveres his upcoming opponent but doesn't fancy allowing him to rebound back in the win column at his expense.
“Sims is a great fighter,” Barboza continued. “He’s really well-rounded and doesn’t have many weaknesses. I expect a tough and good fight, but also expect to win.”
