A super fight between Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and Naoya Inoue is becoming more enticing with each passing day.
Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) is ready to challenge the undisputed junior featherweight king, but first, he must take care of business against WBA bantamweight titleholder Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs, 1 NC) during his division debut on Saturday at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on DAZN.
Rodriguez, a former 112 and 115-pound unified champion, is a whopping -2500 betting favorite to win the fight.
The exercise is essentially designed to serve as an appetizer and checkpoint for Rodriguez at 118 pounds before eventually moving to 122 pounds for fights against the likes of Inoue and even Junto Nakatani.
“People are talking about Nakatani and Inoue, and I am not even in that weight class yet,” Rodriguez told The Ring. “I'm barely moving up to 118, but I have work to do here in this weight class, and I take one fight at a time.
“I know Vargas is going to give me a great fight, and if I am not focused and I look past him, I won't get the job done. We can speak about the future after I beat Vargas.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn has already alluded that Rodriguez will leverage the stage after a presumable win to call out Inoue in a bout that could eventually land on Netflix in Japan as early as December or January.
“Whenever my trainer and manager, Robert Garcia, tells me I have another fight, then I am back in training. It's really up to him and my team,” said Rodriguez. “I am willing to fight whoever, whenever, wherever.”
The missive also applies to Inoue’s younger brother Takuma Inoue, the WBC bantamweight champion. Rodriguez said he is ready and willing to take on Takuma in a tilt that ignites a multifaceted rivalry.
It could potentially kickstart September 12 during the “Mexico vs. The World” show headlined by Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“That's a perfect storyline to the Inoue fight, beating his brother and then fighting Naoya,” Rodriguez said. “I just need to stay focused on this Vargas fight. I know it's a tough fight I have in front of me. I know I can get the job done. I will get the job done on June 13.
“I know when that Naoya Inoue fight does happen, the fans are in for a great night of boxing. People are already talking about that fight so much, it's inevitable at this point. When it does happen, it's going to be one of the great fights in boxing history."
