Unbeaten super middleweight contender Jacob Bank has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough year thus far.
Bank, The Ring's No. 8-rated boxer at 168 pounds, scored a 12th-round stoppage of former IBF titlist William Scull in January and followed that up with a five-round dismantling of Paulinus Ndjolonimu on April 25.
However, he's perplexed at not being afforded the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBO title. The WBO's No. 3-rated contender believes he was avoided in the process, allowing No. 2-rated Hamzah Sheeraz a perceived easier route to the title when facing largely unknown No. 4 Alem Begic on Saturday at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
"I felt that what was done regarding the announcement of the fight crossed the line of what should be acceptable," Bank (19-0, 11 KOs) told The Ring.
"They could at least have waited one day, knowing that I was fighting Scull. I think that as a world title fight, it's a very poor matchup. But now it's been made, people can judge for themselves afterwards what they thought."
Bank expects Sheeraz's coronation to take place without any undue issues and to potentially be a blowout before they come together.
"It won't go the distance — not even close to the fifth round before Hamzah stops him," he predicted.
"I just hope Hamzah is a man of his word and stands by what he told my promoter Kasper Holgersen at the Fury-Makhmudov event. He said there that he would defend the title against me, because he believed that would be the rightful fight for the world title belt.
"I hope that fight will be made toward the end of the year. But whether it takes place in Saudi Arabia or in England is up to Primetime Boxing, Goldstar and Queensberry — and not least His Excellency Turki Al-Sheikh and Riyadh Season."
The world title fight between Hamzah Sheeraz and Alem Begic will be showcased as part of The Ring's "Glory in Giza" – headlined by the heavyweight showdown pitting division king Oleksandr Usyk against kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven. The historic DAZN Pay-Per-View card takes place on May 23 at the legendary Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
