MANCHESTER, England - “We’re back baby,” said Ben Shalom as Boxxer announced their new "multi-fight" broadcast deal with DAZN at a swanky press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Boxxer have been working with the BBC since the expiration of their contract with Sky Sports 12 months ago and have provided the largest broadcaster in the UK with five shows.
Heavyweight contenders Jeamie TKV and Frazer Clarke headlined the first card in November and, since then, The Ring welterweight champion, Lauren Price, and The Ring’s No. 7-ranked junior welterweight, Adam Azim have also benefitted from the exposure generated by terrestrial television.
Now, Boxxer will now bring their stable under the same banner as Queensberry, Matchroom, Golden Boy, Top Rank and MF Pro.
The new deal gets underway on August 8 and their first offering will be a rematch between super middleweight rivals, Troy Williamson and Callum Simpson. The First Direct Arena in Leeds will host what has become something of a grudge match.
“What a day for us. It's been a long time coming. It's been a big deal for us, one that we’ve wanted to do for for a good amount of time,” Shalom said at Thursday’s launch press conference.
“We've had a phenomenal start to our relationship with the BBC that will continue but to join the global home of boxing, to be able to put on the biggest nights, to be able to put on the biggest fights, to be able to pretty much work with every single promoter in the world it’s a massive day for us.
“It starts off with a massive, massive fight and what will be an incredible few months.”
Shalom has spent much of his promotional career at loggerheads with Queensberry and Matchroom but spoke of his excitement at the deal potentially greasing the wheels and making cross-promotional fights easier to agree for his fighters.
There are fights to be made.
Azim against Matchroom’s WBC junior welterweight champion, Dalton Smith, is rapidly developing into one of the best fights in world boxing whilst British heavyweight champion, Richard Riakporhe, looks ready to step in with a big name contender. Just last month, Shalom reiterated his claim that Chris Eubank Jr. remains under contract with Boxxer, contrary to the fighter’s declaration of free agency.
“I think they're a broadcaster like no other in terms of their commitment to boxing and their excitement for boxing and actual fans in boxing,” he said of DAZN.
“That's one thing I'm noticing already, this is a place that loves to put on the fights.”
The first business at hand is the rematch between Williamson and Simpson.
In December, Williamson (22-4-1, 16 KO’s) dropped Simpson (18-1, 13 KO’s) four times and stopped him in the tenth round, silencing his fanatical fans relieving him of his British, Commonwealth and European super middleweight titles in the process.
Animosity has festered over the past seven months with Williamson growing frustrated at just how long he was being forced to wait for this contracted rematch.
Simpson took his time, joined up with renowned trainer, Rob McCracken and is promising a much improved display in August.
“Callum being the champion had the opportunity to exercise his rematch clause and make sure that he can turn this wrong, right. And that's what this is all about,” Shalom said.
“Credit to Troy Williamson. He's got the second biggest night [of his career] now ahead of him and they both got a lot on the line in their career for for for this particular date and that's what makes it so special.
“The way the fans have bought into this story, bought into this this rematch is phenomenal. This will sell out this week and be one of the biggest nights of the year.”
