David Benavidez and David Morrell have both talked a good talk over the last two months with headline-grabbing material.

With fight week at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas finally here, Benavidez and Morrell are inching ever so closer to trading the war of words for actual punches in their light heavyweight bout.

“I'm here to show him this energy. He's in for a long night,” Benavidez told The Ring. “When I tell that I’m going to break his mouth, that's really what I’m going to do. I’m not playing around. He's been saying that I’m nothing and he's going to knock me out [in the eighth round]. Now it's time to live up to that. We're going to put a beating on him. I know it's not going to be an easy task but this is the kind of fight I want because this fight is going to show my level.”

The confidence that the former two-time super middleweight title holder Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) brings to the table is due to a recent run that includes beating former champions Caleb Plant, Demetrius Andrade, and Oleksandr Gvozdyk since March 2023. From the trio, Benavidez only stopped Andrade, a former middleweight title holder who was making his 168-pound debut in the bout.

“It's going to be even worse for him [than it was for Andrade],” said Benavidez. “I'm one with myself mentally, physically, and spiritually. This is the best I’ve ever felt. I'm extremely strong and confident. I believe this is going to be my best fight.”

Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs), meanwhile, picked up a modest win in August against former title challenger Radivoje Kalajdzic. Morrell came into the fight riding a seven-fight stoppage stream but never came close to solving the difficult puzzle that was Kalajdzic.

Despite all of the bashing, Benavidez realizes the danger the complicated Cuban Morrell offers.

“His biggest attribute is that he's a really good, technical fighter,” said Benavidez. “He has a lot of skills. When I accepted this fight, I knew it was a dangerous fight. There were easier fights out there for me but I don't want easy fights. I want the toughest fights. Every fighter is dangerous. As you can see, he has nine knockouts in 11 fights, so the power is definitely there. I have to make sure my defense comes up as soon as my punches go out … I don't think it's going to be easy, but that's why we work so hard during training camp to make the fights look easy.”
