On Wednesday, it was announced that Plant and Jermall Charlo will co-headline a card on May 31 in Las Vegas in separate bouts.
If the former super middleweight title holder Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) defeats Jose Armando Resendiz and the former middleweight champion Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) gets past Thomas LaManna, the plan is for them to be pitted against each other later this year.
Stuck on the outside looking into the super middleweight picture, for now, is Berlanga.
“All the sh!t Plant was talking [about], now he’s fighting a prospect that’s not ranked and has two losses. You are a f--kng disgrace to boxing man, it’s f--king sad!” Berlanga said on social media.
Plant’s preference was to go straight into the Charlo matchup, but Charlo has fought just one since June 2021 and sought a tune-up tilt instead.
Plant said last week: “Berlanga, Charlo and [Jaime] Munguia could all fight each other in any order and none of those fights would be as big as any of them fighting me and that’s one hundred. I’ve brought in more views, my pay-per-views have done bigger numbers, I’ve fought more world champs, and I’ve delivered more exciting fights.”
Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is currently a promotional free agent. He fought the last fight of his Matchroom Boxing deal on March 15 and scored a first-round knockout against the overly outmatched Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz. The bout was the first since Berlanga suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez in September.
Plant also lost to Alvarez in 2021 but came back to knock out Anthony Dirrell in 2022, suffered a competitive unanimous decision loss to David Benavidez in 2023, and knocked out Trevor McCumby in a firefight on the Alvarez-Berlanga undercard last year.
