Brian “Bomac” McIntyre hates rushing into the who's next question.
Normally, the 2023 Trainer of the Year wants his fighters to focus on rest and relaxation after a hard-fought victory. However, now that Lester Martinez is the WBC interim super middleweight beltholder, he already knows who he wants him to fight next.
“I want [Christian] Mbilli. I want that rematch,” McIntyre told FightHub TV. “Mbilli, Canelo [Alvarez] and anybody else at 168 pounds who want this. Let’s get it.”
Mbilli being the first name McIntyre called out shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after their original September matchup on the Canelo-Crawford undercard was scored a split draw following 10 entertaining rounds.
Who should Canelo Alvarez fight next?

Shortly after, the WBC ordered an immediate rematch and while Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) had initial interest, it never progressed beyond that as both teams went in different directions. Nonetheless, both received good news from the sanctioning body recently as Mbilli was elevated from interim to full champion on January 27 while Martinez was given another opportunity to fight for their interim title, albeit against lesser opposition in Immanuwel Aleem.
Despite a few competitive early rounds, Martinez (20-0-1, 16 KOs) showed his class to score a wide 12-round decision win over him atop a ProBox show in San Bernardino, California last Saturday.
As for Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs), McIntyre is familiar with him as well. He trained Terence Crawford, The Ring's 2025 Fighter of the Year, to soundly beat him on points during their Las Vegas megafight six months ago.
Since losing his Ring and undisputed super middleweight world titles, Alvarez has undergone successful arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow and slated to return as part of a September 12 show titled Mexico Against The World in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
McIntyre will have to wait and see if he gets his wish for Martinez. He wants his pupil to enjoy this latest victory, but not for too long.
“We still gotta work on some stuff,” McIntyre said. “Watch some film, come back and get better.”
