LOS ANGELES – The Santa Monica Pier will play host to a boxing event for a second year in a row when junior middleweight contender Brandon Adams headlines “The Butterfly Brawl” charity event presented by Fightbook on August 16.
Fightbook is the recently launched social media network designed to help fighters get discovered, all while giving fans, matchmakers, promoters and other industry professionals a free hub to connect on one central platform.
Fightbook is the brainchild of boxing manager Mark Habibi, head of Wise Owl Boxing. Habibi started “The Butterfly Brawl” seven years ago as a community-driven charity event in honor of his cousin Yassy Hosseini, who passed away from breast cancer in 2016 at the age of 39.
Proceeds from this year’s “Butterfly Brawl” will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Santa Monica Police Activities League.
“This event means so much to me,” Habibi told The Ring. “We started ‘The Butterfly Brawl’ as a one-time event to honor Yassy and to raise funds to fight deadly diseases. It’s fulfilling to see what ‘The Butterfly Brawl’ has evolved into. Cancer has affected everyone in some capacity. We do it for Yassy, for everyone who’s lost the battle, and for those who are still in the fight.”
Also set to be featured on the card are junior welterweight knockout artist DeAngelo Evans (14-0, 13 KOs), 2020 Mexican Olympian Brianda Cruz (2-0) and junior middleweight veteran Vlad Panin (21-2, 13 KOs). The event will also include amateur matches between members of the Santa Monica Police and Fire Departments.
The Bash Boxing-promoted show will also feature non-fistic festivities, as Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys will entertain fans with a live performance. Previous ‘Butterfly Brawl’ events have featured performances from the Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, Too Short, Anderson Paak and Jermaine Dupri.
Southern California’s Adams (25-4, 16 KOs), who knocked out Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) in March 2021, last fought in November. He suffered a disputed split-decision loss to Andreas Katzourakis in the OTX junior middleweight tournament finals.
The Santa Monica Pier is an iconic location in Southern California that welcomes nearly eight million visitors a year. Riyadh Season staged a three-fight card on the pier last summer during the Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov fight week.
