Confidence, bravado, and hubris were detected in the voice of Devin Haney ahead of his world title clash against Brian Norman Jr.
Brian Norman Sr., however, was just as loud in his approach. He believed in his son and was completely convinced he would retain against Haney. However it was Haney who came out on top in their 'Ring IV: Night of the Champions' co-main event on November 22, winning the WBO welterweight title.
With his newly-won belt over his shoulder, Haney has said repeatedly that he’s level's above Norman Jr. He also believes that he outclassed the former champion.
Norman Sr. can’t argue with the results. Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) won fair and square, and it’s now time to rebuild. However, what annoys him is the narrative that his son, who was dropped in the second round, was handed a lopsided beat down.
“Y’all said he was gonna get outclassed,” Norman Sr. told MillCity Boxing. “But you got one guy that landed 59 punches and another guy that landed 70 punches. That’s an 11-punch difference over 12 rounds of a fight.”
Outside of the second round and a few sporadic moments, it wasn’t the most fan-friendly fight. Haney landed just 70 of 271 punches, while Norman Jr. threw 399 but only landed on 15 percent of those shots, 59.
Now, Team Norman will head to the drawing board. Getting back to the mountaintop will take time, but they’ve vowed to do just that and earn a rematch with Haney down the line.
But while they work on the holes Haney exploited, Norman Sr. refuses to let anyone believe his son was obliterated in that ring on that night in Riyadh.
“11 punches ain’t outclassing by nobody,” Norman Sr. continued. “You can feel however you want to feel because of your emotions.”
