Per a statement posted on their official website, the BBBofC, the UK’s governing body, have decided to insert a division between light heavyweight and cruiserweight which will be called light cruiserweight.

The new class will have a limit of 187 pounds (13st 5lbs), which will fill the 25-pound gap between light heavyweight (175 pounds) and cruiserweight (200 pounds), which is the largest across all the current weight classes in boxing.

It means the Board will now recognize 16 different weight classes, from flyweight up to heavyweight.

Their statement read: “The British Boxing Board of Control will be introducing a new Championship Weight Class with effect from 1st January 2027.

“The new division will be placed between the current Light Heavyweight division of 12st 7lbs, and the Cruiserweight division of 14st 4lbs.

“Light Cruiserweight will have a Championship limit of 13st 5lbs (187lbs), and as such will bridge the current largest weight gap between two divisions in the sport (25lbs) and will be available across Area, English, Celtic and British Titles."
