MANCHESTER, England - Pat Brown is prepared for Vasil Ducar to drag him into deep waters when they meet on Friday night.
A large, rowdy pro-Brown crowd is expected to fill Altrincham's Planet Ice for the 10-round cruiserweight fight, topping a four-fight main card broadcast exclusively on DAZN.
Ducar (19-7-2, 14 KOs) is no stranger to British boxing fans.
The 36-year-old Czech is a hard resilient man who is talented enough to have taken former WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith, Cheavon Clarke and Jordan Thompson the 10-round distance. He has been handpicked as someone capable of standing up to the ferocious 26-year-old from Sale in South Manchester.
Matching Brown (5-0, 5 KOs) with Ducar in just his sixth professional fight is a sure sign of the belief his team have of his in-ring abilities, while he grows increasingly self-assured and confident outside it.
"Do you want me to be be brutally honest with you?" Brown said when asked about Ducar's reputation for toughness for the umpteenth time since the fight was announced.
"All this here is rubbish. It means nothing. You talking, everyone talking. It's all words. People haven't gone in there and done it, unless you're a fighter yourself. He's more than tough, experienced and a technical boxer who punches hard. I don't need to sell the fight, if you're a boxing fan, you know this fight Friday is going to be a barnstorm."
Brown's comments shouldn't be misrepresented as an outburst or a broadside, he was just being himself. It's something we should all be extremely grateful for, in this era of cookie cutter media days and press conferences.
That no-nonsense attitude is one of the hallmarks of Brown's first year in the paid ranks. He has quickly become a menacing, heavy presence in the British cruiserweight division and gone about his business quietly, efficiently and brutally.
He is also realistic.
The way Brown has blown through his first five opponents has led people around him to quickly proclaim he's a surefire future world champion but his words prove he hasn't fallen into the trap of believing the hype.
Brown knows that despite the pre-fight narrative, Ducar is more than just a tough guy and is capable of posing him some questions if not fully switched on.
"I want to just be in good fights and see what I'm about," he said.
"I understand people get excitedl, they want to fast track me and stuff, but I've not gone past four rounds yet. I need to learn about being in deep waters and do believe the man to my left will do that in a tough fight, I know what I'm in for."
Winning is the be all and end all this weekend.
Brown's reputation as "The Bomber" now proceeds him but he believes that he may end up needing to show more of the boxing ability that earned him a national amateur title and a place at the 2024 Olympics on Friday night.
Brown will still answer the opening bell in his usual uncompromising manner but is mature enough to know that whichever way things go, there will still be lessons to learn.
"We're both going to punch each other up. It's simple," he continued. "It's boxing. You got two hands and you're going at it. So that is how the fight's going to go with our styles. We're not runners, we're just going to collide like two titans so we'll see who the last man standing is.
"If we go the distance, it's a win-win. I've had a good night of boxing."
