Edgar Berlanga has done a whole lot of talking and not enough fighting, at least according to Caleb Plant.

Every chance he gets, Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) grabs the nearest microphone he can find and calls out a long list of fighters. Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo, and Diego Pacheco are normally amongst them, but at the very top, usually, is Plant.

It was the same old script earlier this month, when Berlanga annihilated Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in just one round. Once he did, Plant was one of the first fighters on his mind. He enticed the Orlando crowd at the Caribe Royale to follow along in his chants of “F--- Plant.”

Halfway across the world in Las Vegas, Plant found it all ironic. From his point of view, it’s just another day of Berlanga barking from behind a fence.

“I feel like Berlanga is doing a lot of bluffing and talking,” said Plant to FightHype.com. “But when it comes to signing the contract, I don’t think he will.”

Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) is a man with a ton of options. Currently, you’d be hard-pressed to find another super middleweight, besides Canelo Alvarez, with more buzz. His brazen attitude outside of the ring, mixed with his smooth skills inside of it, has made him a fan favorite. Winning though, is what he’s all about.

Following a close loss to David Benavidez in 2023, he bounced back nicely in 2024, beating Trevor McCumby via ninth-round stoppage. Now, Plant is huddling up with his team as conclaves surrounding his next opponent take place. He’s slated to return to the ring at the midway point of the year against an opponent yet to be determined.

In all likelihood, it won’t be against Berlanga. However, no matter who he ultimately faces, he made it clear that the trash-talking Puerto Rican is the one he wants above anyone else.

“That’s the fight I want," continued Plant. "I think everybody knows that I want that fight.”
