LOS ANGELES — Canelo Alvarez notched a lackluster decision win against William Scull earlier this month to become an undisputed super middleweight champion for the second time.

The first time Alvarez accomplished the feat was in 2021 when he knocked out Caleb Plant. At the time, Alvarez was considered the pound-for-pound king and was awarded Fighter of the Year.

But there has been some slippage ever since.

Following the Plant fight, Alvarez moved up to light heavyweight and lost to Dmitry Bivol. After just his second loss, Alvarez has landed six straight unanimous decision wins against Gennadiy Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, Edgar Berlanga and Scull.

“I don't think it's the same Canelo, not quite,” Plant told The Ring and other media. “He was at his peak when we fought … but I'm not really trying to get patted on the back for losing.

“Maybe it's been stylistic matchups with some of his opponents, or maybe he's getting older. I can't say for sure. We can only speculate. We'll get a good read on that in September.

“I kind of figured that [the Scull fight] was going to be like that, honestly. Canelo cut the ring off pretty well but Scull wanted no part. It didn’t make for an appetizing fight, but we still have that fight on September 12 against Terence Crawford. Scull does not fight anything like Crawford. We are going to see a great fight come September. You want to say there are weight classes for a reason, but Crawford is a special guy. Crawford is going to make him fight and it's going to be a good back-and-forth. I’ll be watching that one as a fan.”

The WBA super middleweight interim champion Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) is preparing for his return to the ring on May 31, headlining a PBC on Prime Video card at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas against Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs).

If Plant gets past him, he’s set to face Jermall Charlo, who must beat Thomas LaManna in the co-main event for the fight to come to fruition later this year.

Plant also likes his chances to beat Alvarez should the opportunity ever come up.

“I believe so [that I can beat him in a rematch],” said Plant. “A few minor adjustments should get the job done.”
