Callum Simpson told The Ring that he won't be fighting William Scull in his next fight but is open to the matchup in the future.
Contrary to reports, Callum Simpson will not be fighting former IBF super middleweight champion William Scull.
Last week, Simpson’s manager, Kevin Maree, revealed that an announcement on the popular Barnsley fighter’s latest fight date would be made soon.
However, rumours that former IBF champion Scull would be the man in the opposite corner are unfounded.
Over the past couple of years, Simpson (18-0, 13 KOs) has developed into one of the biggest individual ticket sellers in British boxing.
In June, around 15,000 fans filed into Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium to see the local hero fight the previously undefeated Ivan Zucco for the vacant European title.
The 28-year-old former British and Commonwealth champion suffered two early knockdowns but recovered to wear down and stop the heavy handed Italian in 10 exciting rounds.
Simpson is ranked inside the top 10 by all four major governing bodies, and his popularity and drawing power should ensure he receives home advantage for a major title opportunity in summer 2026.
In May, Scull (23-1, 9 KOs) surrendered his IBF title to Canelo Alvarez in their undisputed super middleweight title fight. The pair combined to throw just 445 punches, setting a new CompuBox record for the least number of punches thrown in a 12-round fight.
Although Canelo won without ever getting out of third gear, Scull’s lukewarm performance on the biggest night of his life attracted plenty of criticism.
Still, the 33-year-old Cuban remains ranked at No. 8 by both Ring Magazine and the IBF and has increased his name value.
For the time being, however, Simpson will move in a different direction.
“It’s a fight we may be interested in in the future, but there have been no conversations at the moment,” Simpson’s manager, Kevin Maree, told The RIng.
“Scull would need to come back and get a win before we would be interested.”
