LONDON – Chantelle Cameron became a two-weight world champion by outpointing Michaela Kotaskova in Britain’s first ever women’s world title fight contested over three-minute rounds.
The former Ring Magazine champion at 140 pounds moved up two weight classes for the clash and dominated all 10 rounds against her previously undefeated opponent.
It has been suggested that three-minute rounds will produce more stoppages in women’s boxing but, despite throwing everything at Kotaskova, 27-year-old Cameron was unable to secure the stoppage that she craved.
Instead, she had to settle for a lopsided decision with the judges, who returned cards of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91.
Cameron had been out of the ring since July, when she widely outpointed Jessica Camara in defense of her interim WBC junior welterweight title at Madison Square Garden. She was then elevated to full champion two months later when Katie Taylor was made champion in recess.
The WBC also ordered Cameron to immediately defend the belt against fellow Brit Sandy Ryan, but she decided to vacate the belt citing her desire to box over three-minute rounds, which the WBC has opposed.
She was granted that opportunity for this clash against Kotaskova for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title, but she had to jump up two divisions to do so. The size difference was stark once the action started with Kotaskova, who was three pounds heavier on the scales, enjoying significant height and reach advantages.
That did not change Cameron’s trademark approach, applying pressure behind a high guard while Kotaskova attempted to keep the fight at long range where she could control her shorter opponent.
After an uneventful opener, the fight opened up in the second with both women landing good right hands. Cameron was beginning to close the gap more regularly and targeted the body of Kotaskova in a bid to slow her down. It was clearly working and, by the fourth, the Czech visitor appeared to be unravelling as Cameron chased her round the ring.
That pattern continued throughout the middle rounds with Cameron slowly grinding down the Vienna resident, who was also boxing at 154 pounds for the first time after spending the first 13 fights of her career at welterweight.
She did well to maintain her composure under almost constant pressure from Cameron over the course of the three-minute rounds. Even so, she didn't do enough to win any rounds and the judges agreed after 10 were complete.
Afterward, Cameron faced off with current WBA and WBC champion Mikaela Mayer with the pair heading toward a unification clash later this year.
GARCIA STOPS DOLAN
In the first fight of the live broadcast, 44-year-old Mexican Irma Garcia made an emphatic second defense of her IBF junior bantamweight title, stopping mandatory challenger Emma Dolan in three rounds.
Dolan had been inactive for a year and a day since beating Lauren Parker at York Hall to successfully defend her British and Commonwealth junior bantamweight titles. The victory also cemented her position atop the IBF rankings, and, in October, the sanctioning body ordered Garcia to face Dolan. Then, when the two sides failed to reach an agreement for a fight, it was MVP that won the purse bid and placed the fight on their first-ever event in Britain.
Policewoman Garcia marked the occasion with a devastating performance, dropping Dolan, 27, three times with left hands from her southpaw stance before the towel came in midway through the third.
