LAS VEGAS — Callum Walsh is on the cusp of a career breakthrough, and the 24-year-old Irishman can cash in his ticket to be a face for TKO’s Zuffa Boxing division if he takes care of business against Fernando Vargas Jr. on Saturday.

The clash between up-and-coming junior middleweight contenders is getting special treatment as the co-main event to the superfight featuring Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium that will stream globally on Netflix.

“The fight between Callum and Fernando has been building for years,” Walsh’s career-long promoter Tom Loeffler told The Ring. “It doesn't get any better than this stage, putting in two young, undefeated fighters in their prime with passionate fan bases against each other. That's exactly what boxing needs, and it's a treat for the fans.

“Every time Callum has been presented with a big stage, he rises to the occasion. And the stage doesn't get any bigger with Canelo-Crawford and a worldwide audience on Netflix. It's a huge opportunity, and it makes me proud that it's all been coming to fruition.”

Loeffler has masterfully maneuvered Walsh to be in this prominent position. He linked up with UFC and Zuffa Boxing CEO Dana White in recent years to promote Walsh as a headliner on UFC Fight Pass across locales in Southern California, Ireland, New York and Boston.

Walsh already carried a prestigious amateur pedigree, and his skills have translated into the pro ranks, as the Freddie Roach-coached contender’s winning ways have proven that he’s not a puffed-up vanity project.

“It would make my job a lot harder if Callum wasn't looking great beating these guys,” said Loeffler. “But since he's doing the work in the ring, I've been able to open up doors for him. Dana White deserves a lot of credit for giving us the dates on UFC Fight Pass. It's given Callum an opportunity to headline events in Madison Square Garden Theater and a huge homecoming in Dublin. He's headlined every show he's been on since making his pro debut.”

If Walsh (14-0, 11 KOs) beats Vargas (17-0, 15 KOs), the son of two-time junior middleweight titleholder Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas, the coming year should be a significant one for him as Zuffa Boxing rolls out its slate of boxing events.

“Fighting under the TKO Group and Zuffa Boxing banner is going to be a launching pad for much higher places for Callum,” said Loeffler. “He's very well known already with all of the promotion that he's gotten through UFC. He has charisma, Irish swagger and the fans are attracted to his style. If he performs the way we expect him to, he can become a household name and crossover with mainstream name recognition.
