William Scull? When he was officially announced as Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent, most fans had the same question...who’s that?
Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) has always flown under the radar. Not because he wanted to, but because he had no choice. Getting an opportunity didn’t arrive until he was well into his 30s, but when it did, he took full advantage.
In 2024, Scull worked his way to the IBF mandatory position for Alvarez. But instead of defending his throne, he opted to simply drop the belt. At the time, Scull couldn’t have cared less. The sanctioning body quickly moved on from the Mexican star and placed Scull in the ring with Vladimir Shishkin for the vacant belt.
Still, even with Scull grabbing the win and said belt, most fans are clueless as to who he is. Alvarez though, has been keeping tabs on him. Although he hasn’t watched every fight of his career, Alvarez has watched enough to know that Scull is incredibly dangerous.
“He has that Cuban school,” explained Alvarez to FightHype.com. “It’s very complicated. He knows how to use the ring, he has a very good jab, he has qualities.”
On May 3rd, Alvarez and Scull will collide in a DAZN PPV main event from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. His excitement level for their showdown is through the roof but countless fans are apathetic towards it all. Matchups with David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, Christian Mbilli, and even Diego Pacheco appear to be more appetizing.
To a certain extent, they might be. Some of those aforementioned names bring that young, hungry spirit, while others are established and dangerous vets. In the eyes of some, Scull brings none of that to the table. With that said, he does have something that Alvarez wants.
“He’s a world champion and I want to be undisputed champion again, two-time undisputed champion.”
