"I don't know what fight he's gonna make, but I'm gonna prepare myself for every style he brings," Alvarez said during their press conference at Javits Center in New York. "I hope he brings a good style to make a good fight for the people. That's what ...
Canelo Alvarez asked Turki Alalshikh during their press conference Sunday to make sure that he and Terence Crawford fight in a small ring Sept. 13.
The Mexican legend implied that he is concerned Crawford will move a lot when they square off for Alvarez's Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Boxing's undisputed 168-pound champion was more diplomatic when Max Kellerman, who was announced Sunday as part of Netflix's broadcast team, asked Alvarez how he expects Crawford to approach him in a main event. Netflix will stream to more than 300 million subscribers globally.
"I don't know what fight he's gonna make, but I'm gonna prepare myself for every style he brings," Alvarez said during their press conference at Javits Center in New York. "I hope he brings a good style to make a good fight for the people. That's what I want. If not, I'm gonna do my best to win in every way."
Alvarez invited criticism from frustrated fans who felt he didn't do his best in his last fight to try beating reluctant Cuban William Scull.
The former IBF super middleweight titleholder rarely engaged with Alvarez and seemed content to go the distance with the heavily favored four-division champion. Scull's safe strategy seemed indefensible because that was the biggest opportunity of his career, but Alvarez didn't make much of an effort to cut off the ring, either.
Together they threw 445 punches, a record low for 12-round bouts CompuBox has logged in its 40 years of existence. Alvarez only landed 56 punches, one more than Scull (23-1, 9 KOs), but he still won by scores of 119-109, 116-112 and 115-113.
Crawford assured Alvarez again Sunday that their fight won't remotely resemble his unbelievably boring bout with Scull. No matter how big the ring is when they meet, Crawford promised Alvarez that he won't be difficult to find.
“The only running that Imma be doing is running upside his head," Crawford cracked. "And I can assure you that. Facts. And he got a big head, too."
The four-division champion from Omaha, Nebraska, has moved up two weight classes — from the junior middleweight limit (154 pounds) to the super middleweight maximum (168) — but believes he has the power to hurt Alvarez.
Guadalajara's Alvarez has never been knocked out in 67 professional fights. His lone losses were a 12-round, majority-decision defeat to Floyd Mayweather in September 2013 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and a 12-round, unanimous-decision loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.
Crawford has won 11 of his last 12 bouts by knockout or technical knockout. He is only a slight underdog against Alvarez (minus-185/plus-150), even though he has moved up 14 pounds.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), who will turn 38 a couple weeks after they fight, exuded extreme confidence. He is ranked third on The Ring's pound-for-pound list, five spots atop Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs), but he is certain that will change come Sept. 14.
"When I win, Imma be at the top," Crawford said. "Facts. When I win."
