Canelo Alvarez anxiously wants to show what will happen to opponents when he's fully healthy.
He also wants to show that the number on his birth certificate doesn't matter.
Following his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford last September in Las Vegas, the former undisputed king underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow. In his first fight back, he’ll jump in the ring with WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Some of the chatter surrounding Alvarez's comeback fight is about his age. He turns 36 in July and Mbilli will represent his 69th professional fight.
But while Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) might be five years younger than he is, Alvarez doesn't view age as a factor.
"If I'm 50 years old, he still can't beat me," Alvarez said during Saturday's press conference. "He's a champion, a dangerous fighter, throws a lot of punches and is strong but in this life, he cannot beat me."
Mbilli, who turned 31 last month, began his 2025 campaign strong with a first-round knockout of Maciej Sulecki.
However, he was forced to settle for a 10-round split draw against Lester Martinez last September on the Canelo-Crawford undercard in a thrilling fight which earned Fight of the Year acclaim.
Although that outing marked the first time in his career where Mbilli didn't leave victorious, he was elevated from interim beltholder to full champion after the sanctioning body stripped Crawford for failing to pay sanctioning fees.
Initially, there were talks of an immediate rematch over 12 rounds, though the pair went their separate ways knowing that the bout will always be there. Mbilli told The Ring he sought out a big name for his first title defense and couldn't pass up the opportunity to solidify his standing against the longtime divisional king.
Considering the manner in which Canelo, The Ring's No. 1-rated super middleweight, lost to Crawford last time out, some are wondering whether or not his self-belief may have been hit.
However when it comes to confidence, Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) believes his is unshakeable.
"I'm so confident," Alvarez continued. "Always confident because I know where I am, how I train, feel and how good I am."
