Haney, the WBO welterweight champion, took to X to seemingly express an interest in facing the Chorley southpaw, who currently holds a secondary WBA belt. “Jack Catterall can get it also,” he wrote.

On reading the post, The Ring’s No. 3-rated welterweight Catterall immediately contacted his manager Sam Jones to explore the possibility of a fight with the undefeated 27-year-old, who sits at No. 1.

“A tweet went out a week or so ago and Devin mentioned my name and I’ll be the first to say that I’ll fight any of these boys,” said Catterall during an interview with The Ring on Friday.

“I’ve always been that way. So straight away I was onto Sam Jones, my manager, asking if this fight can be done.

“We got told about the date October 3 in Atlanta. I live well, I’ve been training all year so I said I’d be ready for that date but since that point it has gone a bit quiet.”

Instead, it appears Haney could be on course for a unification clash with Liam Paro, The Ring’s No. 10 at 147 pounds, who holds the IBF belt after beating Lewis Crocker in June.

“Whether that was a tactic from them to maybe lull other fighters in, I don’t know,” he said of Haney’s decision to mention his name on social media.

“But I know this week I’ve seen a lot about Liam Paro and Devin Haney which makes a lot of sense for them to unify the belts.

“But we were told initially that the fight couldn’t be made because Paro was outpricing himself. I’m in a great position still, if the Devin Haney fight doesn’t come off.”

Catterall (33-2, 14 KOs) is relaxed about the situation either way. The 33-year-old knows his position as the WBA ‘regular’ champion means he will be in line to face the winner of Rolando "Rolly" Romero’s defense of the full title against Teofimo Lopez in Las Vegas on August 22.

On the chance of fighting Haney, he added: “I’ve been around quite a while now so I know that until the contract is done then you never really know.

“The fact he mentioned my name and I know Sam was speaking to his dad and speaking to Matchroom and DAZN. There was a possibility but they’ve gone quiet this week. Who knows? They might pop up over the weekend so next week we will see.

“For me, I’m in the gym training so if the fight does come off I’ll be ready. I think you’d say Devin Haney is the No. 1 in the division. Certainly for me and the rest of the fighters, we want that top spot so we would cherish the chance to fight him.

“But with that being said there are a lot of good and great fighters in the division. And the two fighting next weekend, I’ll be over there watching and hopefully I’ll get a crack at the winner later this year.”
